Archie our wagtail trained mice dog.

Another wagtailuk.com + conservationdogs.com success story

We have had great press recently regarding Britain first mice detection dog, yes that's right first ever- the secret to this dog is that he doesn't catch mice, eat mice, chase mice or anything of the kind, as that's easy to train a dog to do-that's natural.

But what we had to do is train Archie to "indicate" or "alert" to the specially trained handler the most recent entry and exit points that mice are using to enter a building during such pest infestations.

We didn't want Archie to "alert" us or the handler to mice, their droppings or tracks, but the high frequency entrance routes they use to "squeeze" into rooms, or chew threw gaps.

This project was a bespoke project for a large pest control company, and Archie has proven very successful operationally.

Scotland visit with The Vincent Wildlife Trust march 2011

Luna had her first operational scat search this month in Scotland working alongside The Vincent Wildlife Trust. It was two days of full searches and was very tiring for both me and Luna, but also very exciting and in such beautiful settings.

We covered many sectors and many varied terrain in our transect searches, not surprising Luna coped with the terrain better than we did.

Luna did amazingly well and made me very proud, it was so nice to see her enjoying her work so much, she was a pleasure to handle.

We can't wait for the DNA analysis to come back on the scats Luna "alerted" on to see how Luna did for her first ever operational search.

We are continuing with Luna's training and we are now able to advance her operational search technique in the areas required.
